Carried out condition survey for conservation treatment, digitalization, rehousing, mounting and display on the Jefferson Bible (TJB) Project for assigned NMAH exhibit and Project Management. Identified feasible treatment options and reformatting protocols for a national treasure. Wrote reports and proposals that addressed those needs. Coordinated, controlled and provided the overall technical direction for the Cold Storage Project to ensure the successful preservation of film-based collections. Applied knowledge for the identification of various photographic and film preservation/ conservation. Provided preparation of film collections (many of which are cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, and color materials) for National Park Service (NPS) organization and its museum management policies to guide with the project development within accepted standards for preservation, quality, budget, and schedule of commitments. Assessed, examined, developed procedures and guidelines for testing, document condition, and treatments the Herbert Block’s collection of original cartoon drawings for the P&P Division. Treatments included media consolidation, reversion of blackened lead white (White out) on paper, removal of pressure sensitive tapes and stains, surface cleaning, mold remediation, humidification, flattening, mending, paper inserts, housing and advise on appropriate preservation methods. Prepared material for digitalization projects and provide guidelines for scanning of Herblock’s collection. Provided briefs presentations about this project during visits and tours to the conservation laboratories for various audiences. Taught and coordinated work with paper conservation interns during the examination, documentation and treatments of Herblock’s materials.

Paper Conservator, Contract Work NDL RBSC Oct. – Dec. 2006

Examined and treated a wide variety of collection materials for the National Digital Library project including “Lincoln’s Ephemera” from various collections in the Rare Book Division. Prepared materials for digitalization projects and participated in providing alternatives for safe handling, movement and support during the scanning procedures and identified the need for conservation treatments.

Preservation Specialist, MDEP Project June – Sept. 2006

Assessed, examined, and surveyed a large collection (19, 000 volumes) of oversized folios slated for relocation to offsite storage. Performed remedial treatments of paper-based objects such as early American newspapers, Asian rubbings, and performed washing and alkalinisation an iron-gall ink manuscripts. Carried out backing removal of large relief maps (250 items), evaluated storage needs and re-housed all the objects treated. Order materials, supplies and train technicians as requested.


Outreach: Training and Conservation Survey in South America July/ October 2008

Consultant, assessor and project manager. Surveyed the preservation and conservation needs of ink-corroded materials from the collection’s of University of São Paulo with Dr. Franciza Lima Toledo (deceased), from Conservare, Brazil and taught a four-day training workshop titled “The History and Treatment of Works in Iron Gall Ink" with Dr. Han Neevel and Ms. Birgit Reissland from the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, (RCE and former ICN) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (October 21-24, 2008) in São Paulo aimed at conservators and collection managers from South American and Caribbean countries at the Conservation and Restoration Department of the Brazilian Studies Institute (IEB) of the University of São Paulo, in Brazil.

Performed assessments, examination, documentation and advanced conservation treatments of a wide variety of works of art on paper, parchment and photographs. Most notably were the following artworks: a pastel by John Russell; Persian and Iranian Korans illuminated manuscripts c. 13th-16th Centuries; Indian miniature paintings; etchings by Whistler, Callot, Piranesi, Picasso, Klee, Matisse, J.J. Audubon; lithographs by Bellows, J. Johns, A. Warhol; charcoal drawings by Hofmann, ink drawings by Smithson; manuscripts by J. Haydn’s letter and G. Washington’s document inscribed with inks and others. Implemented treatments and new conservation methods in the lab including: enzymes, aqueous sun and artificial light bleaching, mold remediation, washing techniques of water-soluble media, and examination and photodocumentation of objects under various lights. Consulted with curators and custodians to discuss and plan conservation treatment priorities and options. Taught and advised on methods of handling, mounting, storing and exhibiting works of art, photograph prints and books and made recommendations concerning fitness for display and loans. Visited various institutions and carried out collections’ assessments and surveys, workshops, staffs’ trainings, and lectures. Maintained and upgraded conservation supplies and made recommendations for the purchase of specific equipment for the laboratory.

This research concentrates in testing various stabilization washing methods presently used by conservators on ink-corroded objects.

Assisted in the treatment of wallpapers in Mrs. Gardner’s Dinning-room, on the fourth floor of the museum. Documentation. Other duties included were: condition survey, encapsulation and re-housing of all the historical blueprints and architectural drawings from the museum’s archive in flat files.
